After the first half of the Wyoming game last week, the Utah offense looked stagnant and dull. The coaching staff made a change and Jordan Wynn got his first action of the season. Wynn and the Utah offense looked much better and the group flowed a lot better. Whittingham said the offense needed a spark... they got it.
Now Whittingham and the rest of the Utah coaching staff have a decision to make. Who starts this weekend against New Mexico? The Lobos come in with the worst record in the conference if not the nation. They are 0-8 and should be an easy win for the Utes. That being said, who should start this crucial game at Rice-Eccles? Cain has shown signs of weakness, but he has led this team (which is supposed to be in a rebuilding season by the way) to a 7-1 record and a #14 ranking in the BCS. Wynn on the other hand has played only two quarters in his career, but the utah offense was doing something they haven't done in a while: moving the football consistently.
Each quarterback has his upbringings and downfalls. The only question is to go with the present or with the future. In my opinion, you have to start Wynn. Don't forget this kid was at one time the front runner for the starting job back before the season started. The true freshman has been aching for playing time and i think this is the perfect time to give it to him. You have a New Mexico team that is clearly no match for Utah and with TCU looming next week, it would be the perfect confidence boost for Wynn... if he does well. This is where i see Utah in a win-win situation. I know Whittingham doesn't like to run a two-quarterback system, but both of his qb's can lead this team. I say give Wynn the start. If he does well, the Utes have a new guy that will lead them to victory and the conference title. If he doesn't do well, Cain goes in and he leads the team to victory and the conference title.
It's a win-win. It'll just be interesting to see which way it goes.
